Four Steps to Becoming a Successful Ultrasound Technician


Becoming an ultrasound technician may not be on the top of the list when it comes to a dream job, but many people realize that an ultrasound tech is an easy way to get into the medical field without having to spend a lot of time in school.  A career as a sonographer is not only rewarding spiritually, but can be financially rewarding as well.  Once people realize that becoming an ultrasound tech is a lot quicker than becoming a doctor, many people choose this as their field of study.  Below you will find found steps that will ensure that you become a successful ultrasound technician.

Study the Proper Subjects in High School

A good foundation begins with a great education.  That is why the areas of study pursued in high school can make a big difference for you career as an ultrasound technician.  It is important that you have a firm grasp of such subjects as math, English, computers, as well as an understanding of health and physical sciences.  These subjects prepare you for the tasks that you will perform on a daily basis as as sonographer and why studying them in high school is highly recommended.

Enroll in an Accredited Ultrasound Technician Program

When taking the time to study to become an ultrasound tech, it is important to ensure that you are enrolled in accredited ultrasound technician programs.  Irrespective of what length of study you choose (there are one, two and four year study options available), by ensuring that the training program you are following is accredited, you know that your education will be recognized in the workplace.

Many students also take the time to become accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education programs.  There is also opportunity for you to increase your value (and resulting wage) if you are working in the health care field already by taking a one year certificate course in the field of ultrasound technology.

Become Licensed by Obtaining Certification from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers

Once you have completed your scholastic studies in the field of ultrasound technology, it is recommended that you get your license to become an ultrasound technician.  The certification training examination is offered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.  Be aware that the licensing process is not required in all states, provinces or countries.  Make sure to check and see if licensing is required in the health region where you are planning to work.

Apply for Work

Once your studies have been completed and you have obtained the required licensing, it is a great time to look for an ultrasound technologist job.  Skilled workers in this field are in high demand and many students have great success finding jobs at hospitals, clinics and laboratories.

In terms of wages, you can expect to earn a minimum of $45,000 per year and many skilled ultrasound technicians earn upwards of $85,000 per year.  Bear in mind that these salaries will vary with geographical location as well as experience.  If you are looking to earn the most money possible, typically ultrasound techs in hospitals will earn the most.
